Starting in 1909, the date was struck into the master die. It is believed that many 1909 working dies produced from a master die exhibiting a Large L over Small L were in service. Their high frequency might indicate that many of these coins were saved, or that a few working dies were struck first with a 1908 working hub, or it is the result of a doubled working hub.
Class III, Design Hub Doubling.
In 1909, the L on the ribbon was enlarged. The master die that created this working die was first struck with the Small L hub used prior to 1909. Then it was struck with a 1909 Large L hub, thereby forming a Large over Small L die variety. Minor doubling shows on the T of LIBERTY.
