Variety Summary

The field inside the crack under the chin appears tilted, showing displacement typically seen with retained cuds. This variety is an example of an internal die failure, where the face of the die failed in an area that is not connected to the rim. Other examples include the ‘goatee’ varieties, the 1892 jeweled forehead, the 8th feather chips that are so common in 1899, and many other die varieties.
