Variety Summary

It is somewhat of a mystery why so many of the CUDs in 1864 appear on the softer, thinner bronze planchets rather than the copper nickel planchets. It wasn’t until sometime in 2015 that a copper nickel cud was discovered for 1864. In stark juxtoposition, 1863 has by far more cuds than any other date. The number of cuds in any given year are more likely a factor of thriftiness, lack of time, or lack of resources on behalf of the Mint rather than the planchet alloy mix.
