Variety Summary

Strike doubling in the date area is common on the Flying Eagle Series, but don’t let that distract your eye from possible repunched dates! A demanding specimen, it is the only die variety dated 1857 with the hub type from 1856. It is believed that two of the eight dies made of this type in 1856 were not dated until 1857. Well struck, these coins are often mistaken as proof strikes.

Specialized research into these dies by Donald R. Curry was presented in Longacre’s Ledger, Vols. 9.2 and 9.3, May and August 1999.
